Stanley Cup Finals

Is it just me, but can you think of two cities harder hit by the "economic shift" currently being experienced in the United States?

Motor city, which is now mostly owned by the federal governments; or

Steel town, which was basically built to make steel for the motor city.

Interesting, to say the least.

New York Yankees strategy session for October

Now that they are 0-8 against the red sox, my proposed strategy is to have them make the playoffs and let the winner of the American league west beat the sox.

Against other teams, they are pretty much unbeatable...so they might as well let someone else try, right?

Sanctuary

So, there is a Russian living in a church in BC.

Let's lay out the facts in such a distorted way so that my position on the matter is obvious:

1) Dude was a spy in the mid 1980s.
2) Dude admits he was in the KGB, which doesn't exist the way it used to, if at all
3) Everyone agrees he isn't a spy anymore, government goes as far as to say he isn't a threat
4) He has a family, including a son born here

Government wants to deport the dude. Something about him being a spy, or formerly being a spy, or deceiving the government before. I could be right, or wrong, it is irrelevant to the rest of the post.

Dude is currently taking sanctuary in a church to avoid deportation. Living, eating, showering, commie spy devil-worshipping - all in that church.

Government doesn't want to do anything about it because - he has claimed Sanctuary, and the keeper of the house has granted it to him.

Ok, so if an enemy of the sate is in my basement, and I agree to keep him there, I get charged with aiding and abetting a wanted criminal. But if a Church does it, its called sanctuary.

How is that possibly constitutional? Sure, the word "sanctuary" doesn't appear anywhere as a known defence - but jeez, certainly the equal application of other statutes is in jeopardy, no? Based on religion?

Tar Baby

I didn't know the EXACT history behind the word tar baby when Peter Pepper (C - 1979) used it - not once, but twice - in the House of Commons. I am pretty clever though, and it painted an image of a black baby. I think it stands to reason a smart person would realize that was a racial epitaph.

However, I don't think the entirety of the blame should fall on Peter Pepper. There are two reasons:

1) He isn't old enough to live in a time of spirited racism where that expression would have common parlance. For John McCain to make the same mistake however (Copyright, AN MP).

2) He obviously didn't write the speech - it was a planted question to be answered by the PS to the PM. As if he winged that. It was probably vetted by Guy Giorno

So, who did write it, and why aren't they getting a lashing? Ooops, I did it now, didn't I?

I thought Canada's Conservatives hated litigation?

Terrorists will be stopped by Nuisance suits

OK seriously, what assets are we going to lean on, exactly - their Embassies? They have conventions that apply to various forms of Crown Immunity, don't you know.

And, to be blunt, do we really want to expose Canada to the same suits based on what Greenpeace does trying to save whales? Technically, in Norway and Japan, terrorism.

Or, I don't know, free speech advocates in countries that EDC works in? Oy.

Now, I am not an expert, but I am not sure that Suicide bombers tend to have vast fortunes that can be used to settle these kinds of debts. Because, they can buy their way into heaven.

I can't wait to have a closer look at the legislation, because according to this news report, it would be Cabinet who designates an organization as a terrorist group, or a state as supporting terrorist activities.

So, any groups immediately come to mind? Tamil Tigers? Can I sue them for holding me up on Wellington?

Or maybe something closer to home. Would it be the Government of Canada or Quebec that gets sued? Elections Canada for providing them with the funding?

This is another STUPID bill that accomplishes nothing. If you want to be tough on crime and tough on terror, why don't you actually do something to stop it - instead of forcing individual citizens to sue their grief away.

Plane goes down in Atlantic

A tragedy, for sure- but don't let anyone try to tell you that these people were lost at sea.

They will be eaten by sharks- my sworn enemies.

I am not sure if this is good news, but

The Yanks are in first place - In June.

With a few games in hand, to boot

This breaks from the standard tradition of being 14/15 games back by the end of June and then rolling through the summer at a pace that would make them the best team in baseball. Ever.

Of course, when you are 15 of 18, you can make that case as well.
